From August 26-27, we had the opportunity to participate in the DataScience Africa (DSA) event at Mountains of the Moon University in Fort Portal City. The event focused on leveraging data and AI to address key issues in agriculture, the environment, health, and tourism. A significant highlight was the DataCities panel session, where discussions centered on how the DataCities initiative aims to drive the transformation of Uganda's new cities into resilient, data-driven hubs. The panel, consisting of Mr. Johnstone Baguma from Torodev and a member of the DataCities Consortium, Mrs. Deborah Baguma, the tourism officer of Fort Portal City, and Brian Nyangor from Jinja City, introduced the initiative and discussed the opportunities cities can leverage from it. The panelists emphasized that the initiative seeks to address three key areas: waste management, revenue collection, and the tourism sector in Jinja and Fort Portal City. The DataScience Africa (DSA) event provided an excellent platform for showcasing how data and AI can be applied to address urban challenges.
