From 11–12 December 2025, DataCities hosted officials from Jinja City in Kampala for a two-day strategic engagement to strengthen the city’s tourism data ecosystem and geospatial capacity. The visit followed Jinja City’s access to two ArcGIS licences through a partnership between DataCities and Esri, supporting a six-month pilot to advance the Jinja Tourism Map and explore wider GIS applications for planning and revenue management.
The engagement included discussions at UN Global Pulse Uganda and a benchmarking visit to Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), where the team learned how GIS tools support decision-making in areas such as urban planning, revenue collection, environmental management, and tourism promotion.
The visit produced a clear roadmap for the six-month pilot, including governance arrangements for tourism data, capacity building in geospatial tools, and the development of digital tourism maps. The engagement contributes to the DataCities vision of supporting cities to use data for better planning and urban management.
